Shelley Lord MSW RSW
I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with over 22 years of experience providing counselling and psychotherapy to youth, adults, couples, and families across a range of settings, including schools, residential and community-based programs, and hospital environments. I hold a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor’s degree from York University, and I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
Throughout my career, I have supported individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult and vulnerable moments. My areas of specialization include anxiety, depression, addiction, self-harm, self-esteem, trauma and childhood trauma, sexual assault and abuse, grief and loss, family dynamics, and relationship difficulties. I also provide couples therapy and support individuals navigating significant life transitions, interpersonal challenges, and experiences that may feel overwhelming or difficult to manage alone.
My approach to therapy is client-centred, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and grounded in the belief that each person is the expert in their own life. I believe meaningful therapeutic work begins with a relationship built on trust, transparency, empathy, respect, and genuine human connection.
I view therapy as a collaborative process, not as a space where someone is told how to live their life. It is about meeting people where they are, understanding their experiences within the context of their lives, and creating a safe, non-judgmental space where they can speak openly about their thoughts, feelings, fears, needs, and concerns. I strive to ensure that the people I work with feel heard, understood, validated, and supported as we work together toward meaningful and sustainable change.
My practice draws from a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, narrative therapy, trauma-informed practice, grief therapy, strengths-based approaches, and solution-focused therapy. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, I tailor therapy to each client’s unique experiences, strengths, needs, circumstances, and goals.
I became a therapist because I understand that there are times in life when challenges can become difficult to navigate without the right support, tools, or resources. Sometimes people need a space where they can simply be heard. At other times, they may need practical strategies, a different perspective, or support in understanding patterns that are no longer serving them.
Therapy can provide an opportunity to develop greater self-awareness, strengthen coping skills, build resilience, reconnect with personal strengths, and begin making changes that feel both meaningful and achievable. My role is to walk alongside my clients through the difficult moments as well as the moments of growth, helping them recognize their capacity to navigate adversity and move toward the life they want for themselves.
Whether you are experiencing emotional distress, navigating relationship or family challenges, working through painful experiences from the past, or simply feeling uncertain about what comes next, you do not have to figure everything out on your own.
Together, we can explore what is happening in your life, identify and build upon the strengths you already possess, develop new tools for coping and growth, and work through the challenges that may be standing in your way. Just as importantly, we will make space to recognize your progress and celebrate the steps you take along the way.

My specialities vary in range. I specialize in trauma informed counselling, intimate partner violence, mental health (depression, anxiety and bipolar). However, throughout my counselling experience I have engaged with clients to discuss life transitions and how their transitions impact them and how they can mange new emotions.
Cultivating a healthy relationship, collaboration and providing a safe space for the client is a key factor in my practice. My hope for the client is for them to ultimately feel they have control over their lives, foster strong interpersonal relationships and feel empowered.
